After nearly a week of feeling frustrated—and a month of December filled with indulgence—I realised my liver could use some extra care.
In Chinese medicine, the liver is seen as the seat of anger. Rather than judging ourselves for feelings of frustration, we can use them as signals to create positive change. Supporting liver health with a tonic can help us process emotions and move through challenging times. Reducing toxins like alcohol and processed foods while adding liver-supportive plants is a refreshing way to welcome spring.
Liver Tonic Recipe
Last week, I crafted this tonic using foraged hawthorn berries, dandelion, dried burdock root, and ginger.
Ingredients (fills a small jam jar):
-
3 tbsp (9g) dried burdock root
-
3 tbsp (26g) dried hawthorn berries
-
3 tbsp (3g) dried dandelion root
-
1 tbsp (3g) dried ginger root
-
1 cup (235 ml) organic apple cider vinegar
Method:
-
Combine all ingredients in a small, sterilized jam jar with a plastic lid (vinegar can corrode metal).
-
Store in a cool, dark place for 4–6 weeks, shaking it whenever you remember.
-
Strain, label with the date, and enjoy. Infused vinegar lasts about a year.
Nurturing your liver with this tonic can help you reset physically and emotionally—embracing spring with clarity and calm.
